Boys’ basketball: Hatchets fall to Crandon, Medford

For the Tomahawk Leader

TOMAHAWK – The Tomahawk Hatchet boys’ basketball team fell to Crandon and Medford earlier this month.

Crandon

The Hatchets faced the Crandon Cardinals on Tuesday, Feb. 1.

The Hatchets played really well on offense, especially Joey Reiter with three offensive rebounds, and by halftime the score was 23-28. Despite how well the Hatchets did, it still wasn’t enough to overcome Crandon, leading to a final score of 38-47.

The Hatchets were led by Tyler Welke with 15 points, and Gavyn Palmer with nine.

“I thought we did a really good job tonight of handling the situations that Crandon gave us an offense,” said head coach Jacob Jarvensivu. “We just weren’t able to execute at a good enough clip to be able to score enough points tonight. We shot a higher percentage from three than we did from two, which just shows that their length got to us quite a bit when we did get the ball inside. I think right now we are a team who gets close to winning a lot of games but needs to continue to work on being able to close people out and actually finish off games where we play well.”

Medford

On Friday, Feb. 4, Tomahawk took on the Medford Raiders.

The Hatchets played very well on offense, especially Jacob Towle with three offensive rebounds. By halftime, the score was 18-41. Despite how well the Hatchets worked together, it wasn’t enough to overcome the lead Medford had at halftime, leading to a final score of 36-80.

The Hatchets were led by Tyler Welke with 14 points, and Tyler Jablonski with eight.

“When any opponent makes 14 threes, it’s going to be a hard thing to overcome,” Jarvensivu stated. “Medford obviously came out on fire and it was tough for us to play defense on a group of guys shooting the ball that well. Overall, I was proud of our resiliency and I think we definitely showed improvement from the last time that we played them.”
