Carol Maxine Engel

In celebration of the life of Carol Maxine Engel, who will be sadly missed. Carol Engel passed away on Jan. 26, 2022, in her home in Merrill, Wis. She was born in Kent, Wis., on Dec. 16, 1942, to her parents Earl and Bertha Smith.

Carol was raised on a dairy farm in Kent, and later her family moved to Antigo, Wis. There, she attended Antigo High School. After graduating, she apprenticed in cosmetology and soon after got her Managers License. She worked as a manager at the Mode Beauty Shoppe in Antigo for many years. Later she founded the Engel Barber Shop, which she owned and worked at for 17 years before retiring in 2005.

Besides her love of barbering, Carol enjoyed her flower garden and had been a judge for a major rose growing company. She enjoyed creating flower arrangements. She loved to crochet and created many beautiful afghans and art pieces. She also enjoyed sewing and used it to create her own clothing and uniforms.

Carol loved animals and owned several Bichon Frises and a Miniature Poodle.

Carol is survived by her husband, Peter Engel; her son, James Willoughby; and her daughter, Carol Luetkens. She had three brothers: Gary, Tom, and Earl Smith Jr. She also had two sisters: Margie Kuehnl and Kathy Ament. She had three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial Services will be held at a later date.
