Hockey: Tomahawk notches two wins, one loss

For the Tomahawk Leader

MERRILL – The Tomahawk Hatchet hockey team won two games and lost one last week.

East Merrill United

The Hatchets kicked off last week’s action by earning a 6 to 2 road win over East Merrill United (EMU) on Tuesday, Jan. 4

“The team definitely did what they set out to do tonight,” head coach Chris Bembinster said after the victory over the Bluejackets. “We talked about starting fast, doing the small things, and getting better every shift. They did a nice job of that tonight, and it led to a win.”

Bembinster noted that he and the coaching staff believe the team is figuring out what it is truly capable of as a unit.

Medford

The Hatchets followed up their win over EMU with another victory on Thursday, Jan. 6, this time over Medford. The final score was 8 to 6.

“We held on tonight to put another win in the column,” Bembinster said after the game. “We had a lot of factors that played into how our game went – things that had little to do with hockey, but made an impact on the group. Hats off to the Medford players for coming back in the third, they played very hard. Again, they don’t all have to be beautiful, a win is a win tonight.”

Barron Area Schools

The Tomahawk skaters wrapped up last week’s action with a 4 to 0 loss to Barron Area Schools.

“We controlled two of the three periods. We just couldn’t get one past their goaltender,” Bembinster said after the game. “He had an amazing game today. Having a couple players out hurt us a little as well, but some stepped up and played well today too.”

The Hatchets are set to host Northland Pines on Tuesday, Jan. 11. On Thursday, Jan. 13, Tomahawk will travel to Mosinee for a game that gets underway at 7 p.m.
