Sheriff’s Office: Oneida County jail inmate dies by suicide

RHINELANDER – An inmate at the Oneida County Jail died by suicide on Tuesday, Dec. 21, a release from the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office said.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 11 a.m., Oneida County Jail Corrections Officers observed the inmate attempting to commit suicide. Rhinelander Fire Department medics were called to the scene, and lifesaving measures were conducted by Oneida County Corrections Officers and medics, but the inmate, identified by the Sheriff’s Office as Wayne A. Maynard, 52, of Rockford, Mich., was pronounced deceased.

The Vilas County Sheriff’s Office and the Oneida County Medical Examiner’s Office are conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death, the release said. The State of Wisconsin Department of Corrections has been notified and is conducting an administrative review. The Oneida County Sheriff’s Office is conducting an internal review of the incident.
