Wrestling: Tomahawk opens season 2-1 at Cumberland Duals

CUMBERLAND – The Tomahawk Hatchet wrestling team traveled to Cumberland on Friday, Dec. 3 to compete in the Cumberland Duals and ultimately went 2-1 in three duals in their opening night of the new season.

The Hatchets wrestled duals against Osceola, St. Croix Central, and Boyceville.

Osceola

The Hatchets opened their night against Osceola.

The dual started at 138 pounds. The Hatchets lost the first three bouts at 128, 145, and 152 pounds, and Osceola opened up with an 18-0 lead before Mason Evans scored a second period fall to put the Hatchets on the board at 160 pounds.

Logan Bishop followed up Evans’ pin with one of his own at 170 pounds to bring the score to 18-12 in favor of Osceola after five bouts. Osceola would secure a victory at 182 pounds to go up 24-12 over the Hatchets. It would be the last bout Osceola would win during the dual.

At 195 pounds, Micah Arnott secured a first period fall. At 220 pounds, Blake Younker received a forfeit to even the team scores at 24-24. Marcus Matti also received a forfeit at Heavyweight to give the Hatchets their first lead of the night, 30-24.

At 106 and 113 pounds, Jack Derleth and Presley Gutbrod also received forfeits at their weights. At 120 pounds, Drew Tollefson earned a first period fall in his bout. Addison Peissig also received a forfeit at his 126-pound bout. Blake Felser capped off the dual with another first period fall to give the Hatchets a dominant 60-24 victory over Osceola to start their season.

The Hatchets won 10 of 14 matches.

St. Croix Central (SCC)

In their second dual of the night, Tomahawk faced a talented St. Croix Central (SCC) team.

The bout started at 145 pounds, where SCC opened with a pin to go up 6-0 on the Hatchets. SCC also scored a fall at 152 pounds.

At 160 pounds, SCC won a tough 7-6 decision to take a 15-0 lead after three bouts. At 170 pounds, Logan Bishop earned his second first period fall on the night to put the Hatchets on the board and cut into SCC’s lead, 15-6. SCC would score pins at 182, 195, and 220 pounds before Marcus Matti would secure a fall at Heavyweight to set the dual score at 33-12.

At 106 and 113 pounds, SCC would win decisions to give them a 39-12 lead. SCC would also earn a fall at 120 pounds and another decision victory at 126 pounds to go up 48-12 on the Hatchets.

Blake Felser at 132 pounds and Ryan Larson at 138 pounds would both earn first period falls for Tomahawk to end the dual, with SCC taking a 48-24 victory.

Boyceville

In their third and final dual of the night, Tomahawk faced Boyceville.

The dual started at 152 pounds, where Brayden Jones earned a 27-second fall to put the Hatchets up 6-0, a lead they would never relinquish. Mason Evans followed up Jones’ performance with a 36 second pin of his own to give the Hatchets a 12-0 lead.

Boyceville earned a fall at 170 pounds to cut the lead in half, 12-6. Micah Arnott responded for the Hatchets at 182 pounds, securing a first period fall to give the Hatchets another 12-point lead, 18-6.

Boyceville scored a pin fall victory at 195 pounds, which was answered by Marcus Matti at 220 pounds with his third first period fall on the night. Boyceville received a forfeit at Heavyweight to bring the team score to 24-18 at the halfway point.

Tomahawk received forfeit victories at 106, 113, and 120 pounds for Jack Derleth, Presley Gutbrod, and Drew Tollefson to go up 42-18. Addison Peissig earned a fall at his 126-pound bout, and at 132 pounds, Blake Felser secured a fall for the Hatchets.

Ryan Larson came out at 138 pounds to give the Hatchets their third-consecutive pin and go up 60-18 over Boyceville, while Sam Nelson received a forfeit at 145 pounds to cap off the dual and give the Hatchets a 66-18 victory over Boyceville to start their season 2-1.

Rebel Invitational

The Hatchets are on the mat again Saturday, Dec., 11, 2021, competing in the Rebel Invitational held in Wabeno. Wrestling will start at 10 a.m.
