Varsity spikers beat Northland Pines, go undefeated in quad at Hatchet Fieldhouse

EAGLE RIVER – The Tomahawk Hatchet varsity volleyball team hit a hot streak last week, following up a conference win over Northlands Pines by going undefeated in a quad at Hatchet Fieldhouse.

Northland Pines

The Hatchets traveled to Eagle River to take on Northland Pines on Tuesday, Sept. 21 and won in a hard-fought, five-set match by scores of 25-18, 24-26, 21-25, 25-15, and 17-15.

Meghan Scholz led the team with seven blocks and 17 kills. Alyssa Zehner led the team with three aces and finished with 11 kills. Claire Albert led the team with 22 digs, followed by Sammy Gebauer with 14. Mackenzie Scholz finished with 39 assists.

The JV1 squad fell to the Eagles 1-2, with scores of 25-22, 17-25, and 15-25.

Cadee Benazseski and Sadie Lieblet each had an ace and a block. Cayley Scholz led the team with six kills. Khianna Vacho led the team with 15 digs, and Caylie Swan finished the match with 15 assists.

JV2 earned a 3-0 victory with scores of 26-24 32-30 and 11-8. The final game was shortened for time.

Kaylynn Sandry had nine kills and three aces, while Bella Marino had five aces and two kills.

Quad

After the victory over Northland Pines, the varsity spikers hosted Newman Catholic, Prentice and Lakeland for a quad at Hatchet Fieldhouse on Thursday, Sept. 23.

The Hatchets ultimately went undefeated, starting out with a two-game win over Newman. Scores were 25-11 and 25-16. Mackenzie Scholz, Emerson Lange, Claire Albert and Alyssa Zehner each contributed an ace to the match. Meghan Scholz led the team with six blocks and eight kills, followed by Zehner and Claire Albert each with six. Albert led the team with eight digs. Scholz finished the match with 18 assists.

Tomahawk followed up the two-game victory with another, this time taking down Prentice by scores of 25-23 and 25-14. Claire Albert and Alyssa Zehner each led the team with two aces. Zehner led the team with 10 kills and 12 digs. Meghan Scholz led the team with two blocks. Mackenzie Scholz finished the match with 20 assists.

The Hatchets would wrap up the quad with a third two-game win, taking down Lakeland by scores of 25-20 and 25-17. Emerson Lange, Samantha Gebauer and Alyssa Zehner each contributed an ace to the match. Meghan Scholz led the team in blocks with two and led in kills with 12, followed by Zehner with seven. Samantha Gebauer led the team with 10 digs, and Mackenzie Scholz finished the match with 23 assists.

Medford is set to come to town on Tuesday, Sept. 28.

The Hatchets will travel to Rhinelander on Thursday, Sept. 30, with JV1 and JV2 beginning at 5:30 p.m., followed by varsity at 7 p.m.
