Dare to Dream: Milestone resident reenacts winning 4th of July parade float

For the Tomahawk Leader

TOMAHAWK – In 1936, little Frances won first place in the Tomahawk 4th of July parade when sporting a “rigged-up” Baby Buggy to resemble The Old Lady in the Shoe.

She shared the original photo with Milestone Senior Living Life Enrichment Coordinator Julie Thompson, who asked her if she’d like to reenact it for the Pow Wow Days parade this year.

Without hesitation, while smiling, Fran responded, “Sure.”

“One of our RCAs’ very talented younger sister built the shoe, and with many volunteer workers and their family members, it went off without a hitch, despite the warm weather,” Thompson said. “We didn’t place in the winning floats, but we feel we won making Fran’s ‘Dare to Dream’ come true. Fran’s daughter and husband traveled from Ashland, Wis., to capture this special occasion.”

Fran admits this will be her last parade, with a smile.
