MEDFORD – The Tomahawk Hatchet track and field team traveled to Medford on Tuesday, June 8 to compete in the GNC conference meet.
The Tomahawk boys competed well and placed 7th with 57 points, falling short of the champions, 149.5-point Mosinee.
The Lady Hatchets were competitive with a 7th-place finish with 50 points, falling to the champions Mosinee at 197.5 points.
“Our team ran really well tonight considering the high heat and humidity with many of our athletes running their best times to date,” coach Kurt Cordova said after the meet. “Even after a short severe weather break, we were able to come back onto the track and put up good times. The competition in the GNC conference is very strong and to have so many of our athletes be able to place in the top three was a good feeling.”

“The long and triple jumpers put in the work tonight and every athlete moved their personal record up,” Cordova stated. “Senior Adam Hall performed at a top-tier level, setting himself up for a 3rd-place finish in triple jump right ahead of junior Dakota Jelinek. Dakota broke his personal best by over two feet for a 7th-place finish.”
The girls’ team was led by freshman Kambyl Mattke in long jump and Halle Derleth, who took 7th place in the in triple jump.
“The four freshman are competing very well at the end of the season and are getting ready for their first ever regional meet,” Cordova said.
Athletes of the Week
Macey Mann – 2nd, 4×800 relay; 4th, 800m run; 4th, 4x400m relay.
“Macey was coming into this meet after having a rough week last week. She bounced back and ran strong to help set the 4x800m relay and the 4x400m relay up for a 2nd- and 4th-place finish. In between those races, she ran the 800m run and placed 4th to score more points for the Hatchet girls. She has had a great week this week working on leg speed and setting herself up to be competitive from this point on.”

“Noah has had a great outdoor season and is furthering his times to get ready for the regional meet. He became a conference champion tonight in not only the 4x800m relay, but the 800m run as well. He set a new personal record of 2:02.84 in the 800m run, scoring more points for our boys’ team. He is working hard and has his sights set to progress his way through the tournament time.”
