Lake Ice Bear returns to Sawdy Pond

A Tomahawk icon returned last week when the Lake Ice Bear, also known as the Hamm’s Bear, was placed on Sawdy Pond.

The bear floating on an inner tube holding a fishing pole was originally used as an advertising display at the Weizenicker’s Lake Ice business, but began welcoming visitors to the community every year from 1958 to 1979, when it was floated in Lake Mohawksin.

The legendary bear was displayed in the Pow Wow Days 4th of July parade for several years before being donated to the Tomahawk Historical Society in 2018.

The following year, a recreated version of the Lake Ice Bear was placed in Sawdy Pond, reviving the popular tourist attraction of years past and celebrating summertime in Tomahawk.

Last year, a bench donated by the Weizenicker was placed next to Sawdy Pond.
