Hatchet golf season underway

PRENTICE – The Tomahawk Hatchet golf team kicked off its season in Prentice on Tuesday, April 27.

Prentice came away with the lowest score in the meet, shooting 189. Ashland took a close second place with 192, followed by Hurley with 204 and Tomahawk with 215.

Meet medalist was Ashland’s Oscar Mulliken, who finished the meet with 38 strokes.

Mason Phalin’s 43 was the low score among Tomahawk golfers. Owen Dickrell was right behind Phalin with a 44. Gavyn Palmer shot a 60, while Faith Myers ended up with 61 strokes.

“We have improved overall, but still need a lot of work on our short game,” head coach Garth Gerstenberger said after the meet.

The JV Hatchet golfers played at Edgewater Country Club in Tomahawk on Friday, April 30.

Antigo took first place in the meet with 203, followed by Mosinee (216), Northland Pines (220), Medford (237), Tomahawk (255), and Rhinelander (266).

Gavyn Palmer was Tomahawk’s best golfer of the day with a score of 55.

“Gavyn has really improved since the beginning of the season,” Gerstenberger stated. “He is very coachable and he has a great attitude.”

Scores from other Hatchets included Drew Albert’s 65, a 67 from Taje Casey, and Faith Myers with 68.

The varsity squad headed to Lakeland on Friday, April 29.

Lakeland’s score of 330 earned first place, followed by Mosinee (350), Antigo and Northland Pines tied at 352, Rhinelander (364), Medford (368), and Tomahawk (466).

Owen Dickrell was the top Hatchet golfer, shooting a 93, followed by Taje Casey (103), Faith Myers (131), and Gavyn Palmer (139).

The JV squad was set to head to Black River Falls for a meet on Monday, May 3. The varsity golfers were slated to host a meet at Inshalla Country Club on Tuesday, May 4.

The Hatchet golfers will be back in action later this week, when the varsity team travels to Mosinee on Thursday, May 6, and the JV golfers play in Rhinelander on Friday, May 7.
