Hatchet girls’ basketball season ends with Regional loss to Northland Pines

For the Tomahawk Leader

EAGLE RIVER – The Tomahawk Hatchet girls’ basketball team traveled to Eagle River on Tuesday, Feb. 9 for a Regional matchup against Northland Pines and fell by a score of 61 to 42 to end their season.

Haley Liebelt had 13 points and four assists, while Ella Genelin chipped in 11 points and grabbed six rebounds. Maddie Marino also had six points as well as six rebounds. Emily Maki led the defense with six steals.

Head coach Dean Borcherding said he and fellow coaches Ron Volz and John List were very proud of the team.

“Battling through a team quarantine, losing teammates through injuries (mostly non-contact injuries), we saw much progress throughout the year,” Borcherding stated. “Scoring 33 points in the second half certainly was encouraging and generated even more excitement for the next season.”

Borcherding said he would like to thank seniors Tianna Gerstenberger, Addison Bartz and Sydney Barnett, who were “committed to the end, even though they couldn’t be there, for their leadership and well wishes. They were missed.”
