Park City Credit Union donates to Happy Kids Backpack program, other area nonprofits

For the Tomahawk Leader

MERRILL – As part of its theme for “inspiring hope for a global community,” Park City Credit Union last week celebrated International Credit Union Day supporting four area nonprofits and launching Shop Local 2.0 – the credit union’s annual spotlight on local small businesses.

“Celebrated on the third Thursday of October, International Credit Union Day is a day to reflect upon the credit union movement’s history, promote its achievements, recognize hard work and share member experiences,” a release from Park City stated. “In effort to ‘inspire hope,’ Park City allowed people to nominate their favorite charity and four lucky organizations were chosen at random to receive $100.”

The Happy Kids Backpack Program in Tomahawk, the MAC Home in Merrill, the Oneida County Humane Society in Rhinelander, and the Firebird Foundation in Minocqua each received a donation.

“It was incredibly powerful to see all the great nominations,” said Park City CEO Val Mindak. “We have so many wonderful and vibrant nonprofits in the Northwoods, and it is our pleasure to offer our support to these four organizations.”

Now in its third year, Park City is taking a different stance on its annual spotlight on small businesses. From Oct. 13 to Nov. 13, the credit union is spotlighting 40 small businesses in Tomahawk, Merrill, Rhinelander and Minocqua on Facebook and their website. On multiple days, the credit union is giving away gift certificates to locally-owned businesses.

Details, including a list of visited businesses, can be found at www.parkcitycu.org/shoplocal.

“When you shop local in the Northwoods, you stimulate the local economy and support local families,” Mindak said. “As we head into the holiday season, our small businesses need our support now more than ever.”
