Varsity volleyball taken down by Northland Pines, Antigo

TOMAHAWK – The Hatchet volleyball teams hosted Northland Pines on Tuesday, Sept. 22. While the varsity squad was defeated, the JV team emerged with a win.

Varsity scores were 26-28, 25-22, 23-25, and 21-25.

“Katie Pierce led the team with 11 kills, followed by Kallie Massa with nine,” said coach Lauren Pfeifer. “Kallie Massa led the team in aces with four. Kallie Massa also led the team in digs with ten, followed by Lexy Millard with eight. Katie Pierce led the team in blocks with eight. Mackenzie Scholz finished the match with 30 assists.”

The JV1 team swept Northern Pines with scores of 25-23, 35-18, and 25-20.

“Top players were Macy Jankiewicz with six kills, Cayley Scholz with four kills, and Sammy Gebauer with four aces,” said coach Emily Pierce. “The defense was tough, with both Bella Weber and Sammy Gebauer getting ten digs a piece, and Macy Jankiewicz with two blocks. Grace Beranek led the offense with nine assists.”

The Hatchet spikers traveled to Antigo on Thursday, Sept. 24, where both the varsity and JV squads were defeated.

Varsity scores were 19-25, 26-24, 19-25, and 16-25.

“Katie Pierce led the team in aces with two,” Pfeifer said. “Meghan Scholz led the team in blocks with six. Alyssa Zehner led the team with six kills. Alyssa Zehner, Katie Pierce and Mackenzie Scholz all had three digs. Mackenzie Scholz finished the game with 24 assists.”

The JV2 team lost two sets to one, with scores of 24-26, 17-25, and 25-21.

“Sadie Liebelt had five aces and three kills,” Pierce stated. “Mallory Watland-Copiskey had four blocks, two aces and two kills. Emerson Lange had three kills.”

JV1 also lost two sets to one, with scores of 26-24, 18-25, and 22-25.

“The offense was lead by Cayley Scholz with seven kills, and Ashley Beck had nine assists,” Pierce said. “Sammy Gebauer led serving with three aces, and Bella Weber lead the defense with 18 digs.”

The Hatchets traveled to Medford last night (Tuesday, Sept. 29) for a conference match, and will face Rhinelander at home tomorrow (Thursday, Oct. 1) at 7 p.m. for a conference match.
