Highway 51 pavement replacement work in Lincoln County begins May 4, slated to wrap up in October

LINCOLN COUNTY – Construction on U.S. Highway 51 southbound, between U.S. Highway 8 and County Road S in Lincoln County, is scheduled to begin on Monday, May 4, 2020, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (DOT) announced Friday, April 24.

Crews will remove and replace 6.25 inches of asphalt pavement on 8.6 miles of Highway 51 southbound from Highway 8 to County Road S in Lincoln County. Additional work will include reconstructing 4.5 miles of Highway 51 southbound, a bridge deck overlay on the Wisconsin River Bridge, four culvert pipe replacements, concrete pavement replacement, curb and gutter, and pavement markings, the DOT said.

Portable changeable message signs (PCMS) were put in place starting Monday, April 27, 2020, notifying motorists of the project.

During Stage 1, from May 4 to May 22, southbound Highway 51 traffic will be shifted to the northbound Highway 51 lanes via temporary crossovers. Northbound U.. Highway 51 will operate with single lane, bi-directional traffic. Access will be maintained to all ramps within the project limits.

Northeast Asphalt, Inc. is the prime contractor for the $6.2 million project. All construction schedules are weather dependent.

The pavement replacement is scheduled for completion in mid-October, according to the Department of Transportation.
