Community Calendar and News Briefs: Feb. 26, 2020

Grace Lutheran Church, 111 W. Washington Ave., Tomahawk, will be having Lenten services starting Ash Wednesday, Feb. 26, through April 1, at 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Both services will have soup luncheons prior to the services at 11:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. All are welcome.

 

St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, 12 E. Wisconsin Ave., Tomahawk, will have an Ash Wednesday service at 6 p.m. on Feb. 26, with those Lenten services continuing through April 1 at 6 p.m. on Wednesdays.

 

St. Mary Catholic Church, 320 E. Washington Ave., Tomahawk, will offer an Ash Wednesday Service with Ashes at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 26. Mass will be said at 8:45 a.m. and 7 p.m. on that day. St. Francis Catholic Church, 5209 Willow Road, Tripoli, will also offer an Ash Wednesday Service with Ashes Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 4 p.m.

 

Redeemer Evangelical Lutheran Church, 16 Theiler Dr., Tomahawk, will offer services every Wednesday during Lent at 6:45 p.m. starting Ash Wednesday, Feb. 26, through April 1st.

 

Tomahawk and Spirit United Methodist Churches’ combined Ash Wednesday Service will be held at 1 p.m. at the Spirit United Methodist Church on Wednesday, February 26.
First Congregational Church,  109 E. Washington Ave., Tomahawk, will host its Ash Wednesday Service  at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, February 26.

A Leap Day Family Fun Fest will be held at the Redeemer Learning Center Gym, 16 Theiler Drive, Tomahawk, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 29. Breakfast, learning stations, crafts, games and free fun for the whole family will be featured. Call 715-453-4814 to RSVP.

 

VFW Post 2687, 203 S. 4th St., Tomahawk, will host a partners 8 ball double elimination pool tournament on Saturday, Feb. 29, at 10 a.m. Entry is $15 per person, with a maximum of 16 teams. All proceeds will go to the Never Forgotten Honor Flight and the Wounded Warrior Foundation in Phillips, along with other functions in honor of Post 2687. First place will win $200, $150 for second place, $100 for third, and $30 for fourth. A 50/50 raffle and other raffles will be featured. BBQ, hot dogs, brats and chips, will be available. A benefit for Mr. and Mrs. Bob White of Irma, who lost their home and belongings in a fire in Nov. 2019, will be held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, N6537 Old Hwy. 51, Irma, on Sunday, March 1, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Lasagna, chicken soup and a salad bar will be served for a free will offering, along with baked goods for sale. Our Sisters’ House Homeless Shelter will hold its fifth annual Souper Soup Challenge at St. Mary’s Corpus Christi Center, 320 E. Washington Ave., Tomahawk, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 7. Area restaurants will be competing for the Golden Ladle Award.  A panel of judges will select the Golden Ladle Winner, and diners can vote for their favorite soup for the People’s Choice Award.  Music, raffle baskets and a 50/50 raffle will be featured.  All funds raised will support Our Sisters’ House. Daylight Saving Time beings Sunday, March 8 with all clocks turned forward one hour.

 

Tomahawk Public Library will host babysitting training from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 24. Students in grades 5 through 8 are invited to learn the basics of how to safely provide care for young children and get ideas for fun activities to do with children. Class size is limited and registration is required. To register, call 715-539-9288. When registration is confirmed, paperwork will be mailed. Participants must bring the completed registration form, a signed parent consent form and a bag lunch to the training.

 

Singers are invited to participate in the Annual Spring Concert Series performed by the Community Ecumenical Choir. The choir is made up of Christian men, women, and teens from the Price/Lincoln/Taylor county area. Rehearsals take place on Tuesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. at the Ogema Baptist Church, W5091 Highway 86, Ogema. Concerts are scheduled for Sunday, April 19 and Sunday, April 26. This spring’s concert is titled “Our Journey Home.” All operating expenses are covered with the generous free will offerings of their audiences and supporters. All surplus monies are donated to a local charity selected by the choir members. The Tomahawk Winter Farm and Craft Sale will be held at VFW Post 2687, 203 S. 4th St., Tomahawk,  from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. every second Saturday of the month until April. Featured vendors will include homemade dog treats and goods, baked goods, crocheted items, wood crafts, clothing, and handmade crocheted potholders. The Tomahawk Memory/Alzheimer Support Group meets the third Thursday of every month at 3 p.m. at the Tomahawk Senior Center, 113 S. Tomahawk Ave., Tomahawk. The meeting is sponsored by Tomahawk Health Care Services. Come for sharing and caring.

Kinship of Tomahawk is seeking Lunch Buddy mentors to spend time with elementary or middle school youth on the Kinship waiting list. Mentors and youth will meet during the child’s lunch hour one day a week, or every other week. This commitment is for the remainder of the school year. Mentors will eat with the child, then either play a game, read a book or just sit and talk. The time together may include help with academics, but at all times the focus will be the fostering of a caring and supportive friendship. If interested, contact Patti Hilgendorf at 715-453-1910.

 

Tomahawk Public Library’s “Play and Learn” program is now called “Library Time.” Library Time is an opportunity for children to develop friendships and early literacy skills through talking, singing, reading, writing and playing. This play based program is for young children and those who take care of them. Library Time will be held from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. every Thursday from September through May. The library also hosts LEGO days from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. on early school release days and board games after school from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. on the last Tuesday of every month. Eagle Summit Healing Center, W5676 Water View Lane, off of County Road A, north of Tomahawk, invites the public to attend free and confidential Community Healing Rooms to receive prayer for healing. Open Arms Community Soup Kitchen is open Tuesdays, welcoming any hungry souls as well as those who want to socialize between 5 and 6:30 p.m. at the Corpus Christi Center adjacent to St. Mary’s Church.
