Hatchet spikers sweep Rhinelander to open season with GNC win

From top to bottom, the Tomahawk Hatchet volleyball team made it a sweep in Rhinelander to open Great Northern Conference action with a big win.

At the varsity level, Mady Hanse led the team in kills with six and tied Morgan Ernst with eight digs apiece to help the Hatchets get the 3-0 shutout win. After taking game one 25-15, Tomahawk jumped all over the Hodags in set two getting the impressive win 25-9. Tomahawk would then drop the hatchet making it a sweep in set three by a score 25-15 to notch the conference win.

Natalie Zastrow led in assists with 16 and Richelle Swan added 10 in the win over Rhinelander.

The Hatchets JV teams also faired well in Rhinelander as JV2 and JV3 won their games 3-0 and 2-0, respectively. JVI won 25-10, 25-10, 25-18 to make it a 3-0 sweep. Alyssa Klopatek led the team with 11 digs and Gracie Barnett and Carly Scholz finished with three kills apiece. Scholz also led the JV Hatchets in assists with five on the night.

Hatchet varsity also had a very impressive showing at an invite at DC Everest over the weekend as they opened with a 2-1 win over DC Everest by scores 12-25, 25-20, 15-12. They would fall to Stevens Point in their next game by scores 18-25, 20-25 before going on a run getting a 2-0 win over Menomonie 25-12, 25-15 and a three set win over Merrill by scores 25-21, 18-25, 15-10. The Lady Hatchets would pay Point back for the earlier defeat as they went on to get the thrilling 2-1 win 19-25, 25-19, 16-14 to finish the weekend invite with a 4-1 record.

Tomahawk was back in action last night (Tuesday) as they hosted GNC opponent Lakeland for their season home opener. This Saturday, Sept. 14 Hatchet volleyball travels to Merrill for an invite that begins at 9 a.m.
