Herbert C. Madlung

Herbert C. Madlung, age 89, of Tomahawk, passed away on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at Riverview Health Services in Tomahawk. Herb was born in Wauwatosa, Wis., on Jan. 16, 1935, to the late Herbert and Bertha (Hauslik) Madlung. He was married to Marsha Bartz on Aug. 30, 1958; she survives.

Herb spent his childhood in Wauwatosa and later moved to the Town of Skanawan in 1946. He attended primary school in Skanawan and later the Tomahawk High School, graduating with the class of 1953. Herb enlisted in the United States Army National Guard and served during the Berlin Crisis until his honorable discharge. He returned to the area beginning employment at Hilgy’s Gas Station, Nick & Sons Casket Factory, and in the Parts Department at the Chevrolet Dealership. He later worked at Owens-Illinois, retiring in 2000.

Herb was a sports enthusiast who loved playing in his younger years and coaching as he got older. His most treasured stars were his own children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He attended their events often and was proud of their success. Herb enjoyed golfing at Edgewater Country Club, he loved puttering around the house and in the yard, working on cars, and spending time hunting and helping the boys build the hunting shack. He was a faithful member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife of over 65 years, Marsha Madlung; his son, Craig (Vicki) Madlung; and his daughter, Janis (Steven) Vogt. He is further survived by his grandchildren, Cody (Emily) Madlung, and Dustin Madlung; and his great-grandchildren, Callen, Elaina, and Ellis.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert Madlung and Bertha Madlung-Hintz, and his stepfather, Alfred Hintz.

A special thank you is extended to Herb’s daughter-in-law, Vicki, for all she has done to help the family over the past several months.

Memorial services, with military honors, were held on Thursday, May 2, 2024, at 11 a.m., at Generations Funeral Home. Rev. Wayne Jahn officiated. The family received friends for visitation from 9 a.m. until the time of services at 11 a.m. Inurnment followed at the Greenwood Cemetery in the Town of Bradley.
